Behold! Beholdle! Like Wordle for Monsters.

Post by Charon »

This might break somewhere down the line, who knows. But I figured there was a second purpose I could use our monster database for.
So please go ahead and begin testing our very own Beholdle!

beholdle.php

If you're not sure how it works, you type out a monster as a guess and get feedback on how close you are. CR will display an up arrow if the target is higher, or down if its lower. Simple red/green for binary values like type, and a yellow option for near values on things that can be partially correct, like environment.

I am interested in feedback. The game currently allows ten guesses. I'm open to changing this if it's too hard or too easy. Obviously this pulls from the whole database so may sometimes pluck specific NPCs. The guess box has autocomplete to help, but tbh, I probably need to tweak it. For example, if you try typing "gauth" it won't find it because it's under "beholder, gauth".
For now, if you type something and it isn't autocompleting, try looking it up on the monster lookup page to see how the entry is actually listed. I'll try and get a better autocomplete working another day.

Obviously, if you notice any weird behaviour, please post it here or in Discord so I can look into it.

Here are some specific things you can do to help!
Play the game. I know it's gonna be hard sometimes, but that's the point.
Click copy results and post your stat block here. It will look something like this:

Beholdle Results
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩
πŸŸ₯🟩πŸŸ₯🟩🟩πŸŸ₯🟩🟨🟩
🟩πŸŸ₯πŸŸ₯β¬†οΈπŸŸ©πŸŸ©πŸŸ©πŸŸ¨πŸŸ©

πŸŸ₯πŸŸ₯πŸŸ₯⬇️πŸŸ₯πŸŸ₯🟩🟨🟩
🟩πŸŸ₯πŸŸ₯β¬†οΈπŸŸ©πŸŸ₯🟩🟨🟩

In a spoiler tag confirm the correct answer (so I can check everyone is definitely getting the same monster).
From this I'll be able to see if you're getting it right or if not, how close you were, which will help fine tune how many guesses to allow.

Session cookie doesn't seem to be sticking so it might not track streaks correctly. I'll add it to the list of things to work on.

Bloody hard one. Note to self, look into yellow code for home plane.
Extend autocomplete for 20 entries and add fuzzy logic.
Request received for up/down arrows for size. Thoughts?

Version 1.2 is now live.

Changelog:
  • Fuzzy autocomplete logic added. So typing "devil" will bring up not only monsters such as "Devil, Erinyes" but also "Ice Devil (Gelugon)".
  • Size now indicates higher or lower as appropriate. No yellow state.
  • Colour logic added to CR; will now display red/green or yellow if within 1 step. For fractional CRs one step means that 1/6 is within 1 step of CR 1/4 and CR 1/8.
  • Home Plane logic now should process correctly but there might be some edge cases I can't account for. For example, should a monster have its home plane as Baator/The Abyss and another has The Abyss/Baator, it won't go green, only yellow, however I do not think there are any such edge cases in the database. If there are, I'll have to figure out how to handle them when they come up.
  • Session cookies should now set properly and last until reset, instead of forgetting you after you close your browser.
Edit: I've realised there's still something to fix on the plane logic regarding "inner" and "Any Inner" etc...

Version 1.3 will be live momentarily.

Changelog:
  • Environmental logic fixed for real this time.
  • On fail, guess reveal now shows monster's entries for closure.
  • Randomness improved to avoid edge case failures.
  • Missing /div fixed.
  • Home Plane logic now utterly foolproof. ¬¬
  • Streak failures should now be accounted for correctly.

To do list
  • Make streak update when answer guessed and display always.
  • Add page number to answer for easier lookup.

Beholdle has been updated to 1.4!
  • Streak now shows at all times, not just on win/lose trigger.
  • Streak now autoupdates on win/loss trigger (hopefully).
  • Win state now shows book and page number beneath monster reveal for easier lookup.
  • Lose state now shows Page Number beneath correct data pull.
  • Page now correctly forces UTF8 encoding for the purposes of autocomplete, so characters like Γ© and Γ― will show, instead of being ? or similar. Curse you Deep RothΓ©. *shakes fist*
EDIT: Fixed Share Results not working.

Beholdle has been updated to 2.00!

Changes are too numerous to list, but basically, optimised the data pull and random generator to be more efficient and removed session based gameplay, putting everything into cookies. I'm not convinced Beholdle was causing the previous lag issues but it may have been contributing.
This new version should be more streamlined, however, it's possible we'll run into bugs as we go.
Your streak might reset. Not much I can do about that.

If you notice anything weird, post here or in Discord and I'll look into it.

Known Issue: There are a couple of entries I found where I accidentally used a return instead of a space. They are entries that end in things like (Whatever version). It's impossible to guess these entries. I will be doing a pass through the database tomorrow afternoon to locate any stragglers and fix them.
(FIXED)
